Child's Play
Matthew 18:1-5
Childlike Humility
1 At that hour the disciples came to Yeshua, saying, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2 And He called a child to Himself, set him in the midst of them, 3 and said, “Amen, I tell you, unless you turn and become like children, you shall never enter the kingdom of heaven.
4 Whoever then shall humble himself like this child, this one is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 And whoever welcomes one such child in My name, welcomes Me.”

Reflect:
Here the disciples are having conversations about the level of fame they would achieve and the kinds of accolades they would receive, and even had the chutzpah to ask Yeshua who’s the “greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” (meaning which one of us is the greatest)!
To answer their question, Yeshua decided to use children as an object lesson. As He placed a child among them, His answer to them couldn’t be more plain—the notoriety you seek will keep you from entering into God’s kingdom. It will keep you from attaining the humility that is essential to being a fully devoted follower of Yeshua, a humility that the Father Himself receives with open arms.
Perhaps you feel like you’ve been overlooked, or that you’re not getting the credit you deserve. Those feelings can feed our insecurities and cause us to focus more on the the rewards or credit we ought to be getting and less on the God who cares for our souls. The Father wants us to embrace the kind of humility Yeshua was trying to demonstrate to his disciples so we can find rest and satisfaction in His plans and purpose for our lives. Are you willing to forgo worldly rewards for a humble spirit that pleases God?
Prayer:
Lord, we want to make it known that You are the greatest among us. Help us to remember that we need to be humble like little children as we confront the insecurities we face when we are overlooked or passed by. Please show our community how to live this way so that those who are far from God will see that it is Your example we're striving for and not our own.
In Yeshua's name, amen.
